Argentine FlagThe second largest country in Latin America, Argentina is located in southernmost South America. Argentina's economy is dependent on agriculture, livestock, and heavy industry

Map of ArgentinaUnlike many of its neighboring countries, whose culture is heavily influenced by centuries of Spanish colonial rule, Argentina has a distinctly European heritage. Most Argentines are direct descendants of Italian, Spanish, French, and German immigrants.

Roman Catholicism is the dominant religion, but evangelical and spiritualistic groups have grown in recent decades.

Following a 1976 military coup, a right-wing military dictatorship ruled the country for the next fifteen years. During this time at least 10,000 people vanished— allegedly killed by government operatives. Democracy returned in 1983, but Argentina continues to struggle with ongoing political instability and high unemployment.
